Green Flag Award England is delighted to announce its inaugural Young Volunteer of the Year has been awarded to Archie Wright.
Archie started volunteering with the Friends of Sandall Park, Doncaster when his great aunt Carin introduced him to the park. He was given a pack of seeds and created his own wildflower garden, tending to the seeds as they grew.
Sandra Crabtree of the Friends of Sandall Park said “He attends the FoSP monthly meetings with his box file of notes and projects for the park. He speaks his mind and puts his ideas across in a clear and concise manner. He contributes greatly to the meetings.”
“All our events are supported by Archie and he undertakes whatever task is asked of him – if he hasn’t already thought of something to do on the day. He ensures he’s available for all major events – like the launch of our new play equipment.”
He became hooked on volunteering after being inspired by his mentor, FoSP Ranger Les. Having worked with Les in the park, he decided he wanted to be a Ranger and create a FoSP Junior Ranger Club which he now leads. He put the idea to the FoSP committee at a meeting and the product was born. He designed the posters and set the date and content of the first few induction meetings.
Archie also created a Rainbow Bench for use by children who felt alone and needed a friend. If they sat on the bench it meant “will someone be my friend”.
National & International Green Flag Award Judge, Chris Worman MBE (pictured), said: "I was thrilled to be able to present the first Green Flag Award Young Volunteer of the Year. Archie's work in Sandall Park is inspirational leading a team of 25 young rangers. He is truly a worthy winner."
